Bek asked me if I could post this.  I probably could improve this if I spent some time aligning and processing the raws, but I'm lazy (plus I don't have the software right now).

Yeah saturn

I should try reprocessing at some time; this was a quick and dirty pass I did shortly after taking the raws.

What's that next to it? One of its moons? Or just a star?

There's actually 4

The only way I could know would be to look up positions for when I took this as all 4 appear to be in saturn's orbital plane. Some scopes you can distinguish stars from other objects by the presence of diffraction spikes, but a sct doesn't have a spider to produce them.

So yes those are 4 moons of Saturn you are seeing.

The bright one is Titan, moving inward you have Tethys and Dione and on the opposite side you have Rhea.

This was shot through an 8-inch telescope using a CCD made for astrophotography.  If I set the exposure time lower you would actually be able to make out details on saturn, but I might not have captured the moons.

Using a much smaller scope (76mm) and a cellphone I took this: http://www.villanous...showtopic=19342

This one is shot through the eyepiece of a 70mm scope with an actual camera
