Rappelz World Map

So I went looking for a world map online and whaaaaaat, there are none (I could find) for the current Rappelz version!

Well that's not good enough for me, so I went and extracted the maps stitched and sliced them, and then got myself a nice maps API that I could learn and use.
I found a fantastic API called leaflet, anyone interested in how it works can go have a look, it's open source, multi-platform, mobile friendly, etc.
Leaflet Homepage

Next thing I know, I've done a little work, learning leaflet, mapping, and had a bit of fun and TAHDAH!
(I might move it to a new URL later like, maps.villanousity.com or something.)
Rappelz World Map

Things I have

I've got the basic map from a fairly low zoom level.
The farthest zoom (default) is a half size version of what I have, made so you can zoom out and see the whole world.

The two closest zooms were generated from what I have by expanding it and using a simple sharpen on the enlarged image so they don't look as horrid.
These are good for getting a close zoom and placing things accurately, like NPC's.

There are also older maps that have mob locations, pet taming areas, etc listed, like the ones posted to the gpot forums:
Maps on gpot forum

Things to add?

In the interests of making a map that has it all and what people want here are some things that would be nice to have.

Higher zoom maps like those actually used in the in game mini map, which I don't know how to extract.
The idea of screen capturing them from in game seems like a lot of effort and doesn't give a 'clean' map.
Clean means I want to have it without all the markers and icons on it, because if they're part of the image, I can't 'turn them off'. :P

Level ranges for mobs and areas like those in the mob map linked above.
Those are quite old now but are probably mostly right so I'll start with that to begin with but any information on what is wrong and what needs to be changed would be great!

Taming spots like those in the pet map linked above would be great to have.
Again, I can start with the data in that old map, but it lacks the newer pets, and some areas might have changed.
Any information to help get that information up to date would be great!

NPC details
I'll start by adding all the NPC's shown on the in game map, as that's pretty easy.
I know some are not shown on there or are hidden etc, so let me know details on those I'll miss.

Quest details
At a later date I'd like to incorporate quest details into the map with NPC starting point, quest objective locations, etc.
Any information on this would be hugely appreciated. :)
Ideas on how to best represent this or what details people think are most important are welcome.

How to Contribute

If you want me to add things, the easiest way is to tell me what it is and where, and I've tried to make that easy.

Location Log
I've done this by adding a location log to the bottom left of the view, where locations you click will be added to that list.
You can click the copy icon to select the whole list (and then use copy yourself).
You can click the X icon to clear the list.

Locations
Try to zoom in as much as you need to get the location as precise as possible, and click the spot on the map.
It's helpful to clear the location log before you do this so only the location you care about is in it. :)
Copy the co-ordinates for the place you clicked from the location log and post them on here to me and tell me what's there.

Areas
If you want to get a zone then I need polygon co-ordinates.
This is a set of points that I can join up and 'circle' the zone and colour it.
To get these easily, clear your location log and then going around the border of the area you want to mark click at all the edges.
This will give you a list of points in the location log, and you can copy that whole list and post it here for me, and I can then mark that area. :)

Feedback

Any other ideas or feedback on this would be greatly appreciated.
As most know, though I enjoy Rappelz a lot, I'm not a hardcore leveller, and so I don't have the high level characters needed to explore and mark out some areas myself, so any feedback and suggestions on those are vital to making a nice useful map for everyone!

The Labyrinth is a dungeon on the north side of Kaia Lake in the center of Veiled Island.

The MC Trial Dungeon can be accessed via Hector near where you kill the Ultimate Witch.

Locations for bosses like Silex, Draka, and Drillbot would be cool, but I'd need to point those out to you.

Locations for the flower map toggled on and off would be very useful:

HV and Flea Market are missing.

When this is done, everyone is going to be jealous of us.

Tonight I might expand the dev control to put markers on the map where you click to show which co-ordinates you have, will make it easier for me when I paint in all the zones, so might as well put it in the main version. :)

This is awesome Ash! Imagine if we made this public, how much our traffic would sky-rocket.

Clicking now adds markers for everything in your list.
You can click a list item to change the marker colour, so if you want to mark a dozen places and have different colours you can.

When you copy and paste to the forums, it'll put it in list format so it's easy to read, and when pasting to a spreadsheet it'll column it with tabs. :P
  • 72.18 61.61
  • 71.31 60.86
  • 70.36 59.19
  • 69.76 56.47
All this means for me, I can generate blocks of code from lists in seconds.

I also added a pretty location indicator that displays the location of your mouse as you move, so you know the right location goes into the list. ;)
I decided to make it thematic, and used numbers taken from rappelz to style it!

I decided that clicking in the list might be silly, so you can now also click the marker to toggle colours.

And because it was annoying me, you can drag your own markers as well, it updates the locations in the log. :)

As far as I know I can't the make the map natively align with in game positions.
Is it worth seeing if I can mangle it to match?

If you want to get a bunch of locations from around the continent and their positions I can try and determine a translation formula and incorporate the game positions into this map.
If you do, try and make the position and co-ords from map as precisely equal as possible. :)

The ingame coordinates would be worth it, if it would make your life easier... Otherwise people should be wanting to contribute to this as like you said there are no good rappelz reference maps out there... Long term we could definitely turn this into a wiki- type deal :D

Is there a way to make it more a cooperative work? By editing the map ourselves instead of collecting the data and let you edit the map. There is a huge volume of locations to put on a map. Just for the NPCs there are like 250 locations.

If you place markers on the map and paste the location list here for me, then you're doing most of the work.
If I have the list, it takes less than a minute to import it all into the map.

That's pretty much why I added the location list to it, so everyone could help put it all together and I can put it online.
